Guess who’s related? Marsai Martin and Janelle Monáe! Turns out actress/producer Martin and actress and singer Monae are cousins.
Monáe and Martin told the story of how they figured out they were related in a recent InStyle interview for its September issue.
“I admire so many things about Janelle. My family members would always tell me how we were related, so I was excited when we got to meet and say hello in person,” said Martin. She continued, saying that she and her mother Andrea finally met Monáe at a Golden Globes afterparty.
Monáe, who referred to her and Martin as being “cousins on cousins on cousins,” recalled the meeting, saying, “You were with your mom, and she was naming members of my family, and I was like ‘Oh my goodness!’ I don’t meet many people who know about my small community in Kansas City, Kan. It was the best news because I’m such a fan of you and your role on Black-ish.”
Martin called Monáe one of her personal style icons, saying she looks to Monáe for style inspiration.
“She’s so true to herself with everything that she puts on,” she said. “And she can also pull off things that no one else can, like her most recent Met Gala look. She’s definitely a big inspiration for me.”
Turns out Black Hollywood excellence runs in the bloodline.
