Legendary’s Monsterverse is coming to Apple TV+’s upcoming series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. The 10-episode sereis will premiere Nov. 17 with two episodes and will debut each episode every Friday until the Jan. 12, 2024 season finale.
The series continues the Toho monsters universe including Godzilla, and takes place after Godzilla and the Titans destroyed San Francisco in 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. After the world realizes Godzilla and Titans exist, one family realizes they are even closer to the monsters than they even realized. According to the official description:
Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco, and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga – spanning three generations – reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.
The series stars Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett and Elisa Lasowski.
The series hails from Legendary Television and is co-developed and executive produced by Chris Black adn Matt Fraction. Matt Shakman executive produces and directs the first two episodes. Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell also executive produce with Andy Goddard, Brad Van Arragon and Andrew Colville. Toho Co. Ltd’s Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita executive produce, with Toho licensing the Godzilla character and other Titans to Legendary as part of their working relationship.
Shakman, Tunnell and Harold released a producers’ statement about the first three episodes, stating how they are “incredibly excited” to share the episodes with fans of the Toho monsters and Legendary film series.
“Over the last few years, we feel fortuntae to have been able to work on a show that allowed us to embrace the scope and mythology of Legendary and Toho’s Monsterverse,” the producers stated. “Through 10 hours of character-driven television, our show explores the question of who the true monsters are in a world of coexistence with TItans, while at the same time taking us on a globetrotting adventure that will hopefully keep the audience as entertained as they are emotionally engaged.”
