The first images of Quvenzhané Wallis in character on black-ish has been released, giving us our first indication of what the new Johnson family dynamic will be like.

Wallis’ character Kyra has been brought into the family by her cousin Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Bow (Tracee Ellis Ross). As we reported in November 2018, Kyra is coming to the Johnsons’ household because her mother can no longer take care of her. —

The episode will air Jan. 22. According to Entertainment Weekly, who exclusively showcased the images first, Wallis’ character will be at the center of a “multi-episode arc.”

According to Entertainment Weekly, Wallis’ debut episode will be titled “Waltz in A Minor” and will feature Dre and Bow helping Kyra “adjust to surburban life.” Jack and Diane also try to do some internet research of Kyra via social media.

From the pictures, it seems like Kyra figures out how to fit into her new family. But as many online pointed out when news of Wallis’ casting was first announced, adding a new character to a show can sometimes indicate that a show is going stale. Hopefully that’s not the case with black-ish; if anything, Wallis’ character might be the infusion of new ideas the show needs to keep going strong.
