The BreaksI’m not in VH1’s general target audience, and so there’s really very little I’ve ever watched on the network over the years; but this is one that I’ll definitely be checking out when the time comes, if only because of the man calling the shots on this one – Seith Mann (who you might recall was on my short list of directors that Marvel should talk to about its upcoming Black Panther movie).

VH1’s next original movie “The Breaks” will chronicle the journey of Nikki, David and DeeVee, 3 friends united by their love of hip-hop, as they work to make their big mark in the music industry. The film will take viewers back to the summer of 1990, in New York City (I was still in high school at the time and was a major hip-hop head then), where the music industry’s artists and hustlers intersect in the dance clubs and the street corners of the still crime-ridden city. But they will all soon discover lives can be broken as fast as legends can be born.

From VH1: “The Breaks” reunites two Wire favorites Wood Harris and Mack Wilds. The cast is led by Afton Williamson and newcomers David Call along with Antoine Harris, Evan Handler, Russell Hornsby and rapper Method Man. Based on the book by journalist Dan Charnas’ entitled “The Big Payback,” a narrative history of the hip-hop business, “The Breaks” is written, directed and executive produced by Seith Mann and is scored and executive music produced by the legendary, DJ Premier.

“The Breaks” will premiere in the winter – no official date announced yet.

In addition to Seith Mann, Dan Charnas. Maggie Malina will also serve as executive producers.

Darren Goldberg will executive produce for Atlantic Pictures.

VH1 executive producers are Susan Levison and Bill Flanagan.

It’s seemingly a good time for hip-hop period pieces on the big and small screens.
