Here’s your first look at Cutter Hodierne’s Sundance 2014 award-winning feature film debut (which, by the way, is based on his Sundance 2012 award-winning short film of the same name), titled Fishing Without Nets.

As a recap, the short version of Fishing Without Nets centers on a naïve and desperate young Somali man who is coerced to join a band of local pirates as they embark upon a hijacking, but instead of the riches he was promised, he finds mayhem and chaos as his reward.

The feature film follows the pirate narrative in Somalia, told from the perspective of a struggling, young Somali fisherman. 

The cast includes: Abdikani Muktar, Abdi Siad, Abduwhali Faarah, Abdikhadir Hassan, Reda Kateb, and Idil Ibrahim.

Production on the film took place in late 2012, in parts of eastern Africa, marking Hodierne’s feature film directorial debut.

The feature-length is first in a series of films VICE is producing and financing.

The team who produced the short – Raphael Swann, John Hibey, and Cutter Hodierne – return as producers on the feature, partnering with Ben Freedman and Rupert Wyatt of Picture Farm, along with Victor Shapiro.

In addition to winning the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2012, the short film also picked up the Cinedigm Jury prize at The Wrap’s ShortList festival, and screened at the Seattle International Film Festival, Rooftop Films, Abu Dhabi Film Festival, and was included in a 17-city tour as part of the Sundance Institute Art House Project Shorts Program.

The feature-length version premiered at the Sundance Film Festival just last month, where director Hodierne was awarded the Directing Award: U.S. Dramatic.
