2014 BlackStar Film Fest Announces Call for Film Submissions & Revamped Screenplay Competition

nullPhiladelphia’s third annual BlackStar Film Festival has announced its call for short film screenplay submissions. In addition, film submissions (shorts and features, narrative and documentary) area also currently being accepted.

The deadline for all of the above is May 15th at 11:59pm EST, so you’ve got just under a month. Get moving!

Regarding the short film screenplay competition, to be eligible, screenplays must be:

  • written by a person of African descent.
  • a maximum of 15 pages.
  • written in English.
  • unproduced works.
  • copyrighted or WGA registered.

Emphasis is on short film; hence, no web series or TV serial scripts.  

Finalists will be announced on July 1, and the winning screenplay, which will be announced at the festival’s close, on Sunday, August 3rd at World Café Live, will be produced by BlackStar and directed by Terence Nance (An Oversimplification Of Her Beauty, amongst other acclaimed works). 

Nance will also head this year’s jury.

The third annual festival takes place from Thursday, July 31st through Sunday, August 3rd at venues throughout University City, including International House Philadelphia, Institute of Contemporary Art at University of Pennsylvania, Scribe Video Center, and World Café Live.

“We are super excited to put this unique spin on the 2014 screenplay competition. I have a lot of respect for Terence’s work and am so grateful for his enthusiastic participation,” says BlackStar founder Maori Holmes.

Writer/performer Radha Blank won the competition’s inaugural $2,500 grand prize, last year, when it was first launched, thanks in part to the Knight Arts Challenge Grant.
