On Monday, May 20, 1996, 23 years ago this week, the one-hour season finale of The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air aired on NBC. Throughout the sitcom’s six-year run, viewers were treated to some of the best moments not only in Black sitcom history, but sitcom history overall.

Here are five of the most memorable scenes from The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air.

1. Aunt Viv Busts A Move

In what is perhaps one of the series’ most iconic moments, Aunt Viv (Janet Hubert) showcases her dance moves. In the 1991 episode “The Big Four-Oh”, Vivian makes the decision to revisit her talents as a dancer on the heels of her 40th birthday. Initially, Will’s aunt and the Banks’ matriarch dives into her journey with a cloying sense of self-doubt. However, she emerges triumphant and delivers a memorable dance routine to C+C Music Factory’s hit tune “Gonna Make You Sweat.”

2. Hilary’s Fiance Proposes…Then Plummets To His Death

In the third season of The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, viewers were introduced to Hilary Banks’ pretentious fiancé, news anchor, Trevor Collins-Newsworthy. However, it all went downhill in season 4 when Trevor decides to propose to Hillary on live television while bungee jumping. Things go awry when Trevor’s bungee cord malfunctions. Long story short, Hilary’s fiancé plummeted to his death right after she agrees to take his hand in marriage.

3. Aunt Viv Gives A Crash Course On Black History

Under Janet Hubert, Aunt Viv grew from a supporting character to one of television’s most beloved aunts. The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air was not afraid to explore all aspects of history. In the clip above, Aunt Viv gives students at the Bel-Air Academy a crash course on Black history.

4. The Carlton Dance

We would be remiss to make a list a about The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air’s most memorable moments and not include the “Carlton Dance.” Throughout the series, Will’s quirky cousin, Carlton is often depicted performing the dance to the quaint tune “It’s Not Unusual” by Tom Jones. First introduced in the season 2 episode “Christmas Show”, the dance has become synonymous with popular culture.

5. Will Takes A Bullet For Carlton

In the 1995 episode “Bullets Over Bel-Air”, Carlton is almost robbed and killed at an ATM, by a gunman, but Will takes the bullet for him. With this episode, viewers were treated to one of the series’ more emotional moments, as well as the more serious aspect of the relationship between Will and Carlton.
