Two days ago, Starz announced that the network had extended Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s exclusive premium overall deal for another year into September 2018, to develop new projects via his G-Unit Film & Television, Inc. The first project is titled “Tomorrow, Today,” based on a screenplay penned by Jackson, which is described as a superhero-themed series about a veteran from the south side of Chicago who, after being falsely imprisoned, becomes the personal experiment of a mad prison doctor trying to create the perfect man, and an unstoppable killing machine. Set free, but on the run, the veteran must reconcile with the world that has turned against him, and use his newfound abilities for good.

“I am looking forward to continuing my relationship with my Starz family; we have had great success together on ‘Power’ and I am excited to get going on all of our upcoming projects together. I knew Starz would be the perfect home for ‘Tomorrow, Today.’ This project is very personal to me…creating it, writing it, finding the best team for it and I will continue to be involved every step of the way.” said 50 Cent.

Potential members of his “best team” for “Tomorrow, Today” might include Wood Harris in the series’ starring role. In an exclusive interview with TV Guide magazine published today, 50 Cent shared the following when asked who he’d like to see topline the project: “I like Wood Harris… I want to work with Wood… They [Hollywood] haven’t shown Chicago as it is. Wood is from Chicago. He’s at home with it, he’s going to be bringing people he can draw from… the culture there is a very special culture. It’s not Los Angeles or New York City.”

Wood Harris is of course likely best remembered for his role as Avon Barksdale in HBO’s critically-acclaimed drama “The Wire,” although he’s done so much else since then, both on the big and small screens. Most recently, he appeared in VH1’s original movie on the early days of hip hop, titled “The Breaks,” from director Seith Mann, which the network is turning into a series.

An unexpected though very inspired choice for the role of the seemingly reluctant superhero.

50 Cent also mentioned Mos Def/Yasiin Bey as a possibility, although he seems more sold on Harris as the man for the job. Will Starz network brass feel the same way? I assume they’ll certainly take any casting recommendations made by 50 Cent very seriously, since it is his creation; and given the new extension of his overall deal with Starz, we could say that he already has their confidence, especially with the ratings success of “Power” which 50 Cent executive produces as well as co-stars in.

A team of writers have been hired to script the series, including Anthony Cipriano, writer, producer and creator of A&E’s critically-acclaimed “Bates Motel” series, as well as Dan Kay (the 2015 Nicolas Cage thriller “Pay the Ghost”) so it should hopefully be in good hands.

“We’re excited to develop this series with Curtis to showcase his producing skills with this unique storyline,” said Carmi Zlotnik, managing director of Starz.

Cipriano and Kay will also executive produce “Tomorrow, Today” with Kirkland Morris serving as producer. Senior Vice President of Original Programming Ken Segna and Director of Original Programing Patrick McDonald will be the Starz executives in charge of “Tomorrow, Today.”
