A Michael Jackson Musical Is Coming To Broadway

We’ve seen Michael Jackson reincarnated in various forms in mainstream media over the last few years. We’ve seen his image parlayed into a hologram, his voice and musicality parlayed into a posthumous album and his persona parlayed into a questionable episode of a British sitcom starring Joseph Fiennes as the singer. Now, the singer’s life will get the Broadway treatment with The Hollywood Reporter stating the Michael Jackson Estate and Columbia Live Stage announced a new musical inspired by Jackson is in the works and slated to arrive at Broadway in 2020.

Lynn Nottage, a two-time Pulitzer Prize writer, is slated to scribe the book for the biographical show, while Tony Award-winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon is slated to stage the show. The musical will draw from Jackson’s musical catalog, which includes his recordings with the Jackson 5 to his later solo work that altered the landscape of the music industry, including 1979’s Off the Wall, his epochal 1982 album, Thriller, and his 1987 album, Bad.

The play is the latest in a long line of media projects tailored to cater to the public’s fascination with Jackson, as the singer was the subject of a recent controversial ABC special titled The Last Days of Michael Jackson.
