The Color Purple is coming back.
Warner Bros. is adapting the Broadway musical based on The Color Purple into a film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Of course, the original 1985 film, based on the classic Alice Walker novel, was directed by Steven Spielberg and starred Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey. It earned 11 Oscar nominations.
This sounds a little convoluted, and it also might get some purists upset since the film is so widely accepted among Black viewers. Already, the internet is abuzz with whether the remake is necessary since there are so many versions of the story available. Some people, though, are excited to see another version of The Color Purple on the big screen.
They are producing color purple? Take my coins Quincy, Oprah and Spielberg. Take them all. That movie must break the box office. ????

RTs> A movie version of the Broadway Musical rendition or not, the answer is still NO. Please, no...
Some things you can't even replicate, and that is the feelings the original Color Purple movie draws out of you with each part of the story...

So if Cynthia Erivo gets cast in The Color Purple musical movie and wins an Oscar for it (both are likely) she would have gotten EGOT all for playing Celie.

Spielberg, Winfrey, Quincy Jones and Scott Sanders are producing the film. Winfrey, Jones and Sanders produced the Broadway musical, so concerning the music, the film is in good hands.
"We're really excited to create a film that translates the heart and emotion we found in telling this generational story on stage," said Sanders, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "This is an incredibly powerful drama that needs to be shared."
No other news about the film has been released, including if any of the stage musical's stars, including Cynthia Erivo, Danielle Brooks, Fantasia Barrino and Jennifer Hudson, will be a part of the film.
