A Ugandan man became a lawyer and won back his family's land 23 years after it was stolen from his father in a court dispute.

BBC Newsday reports Jordan Kinyera was only 6 years old when his family lost the property. On Monday, 18 years later, the High Court ruled the land be returned to its rightful owner, his father.

Kinyera's father became involved in a land dispute in 1996 when his neighbors sued him for ownership.

"My dad was retired, so he didn't have a lot of resources," Kinyera told the publication. "He wasn't earning at that time. He was desperate and there is something dehumanizing about being in a desperate situation and not being able to do something about it. That is what inspired me the most."

The case didn't see a resolution for over two decades. During that time, the family did not have access to the land, which crippled access to the financial support it used to provide.

"I made the decision to become a lawyer later in life but much of it was inspired by events I grew up witnessing," he continued, "the circumstances and frustrations my family went through during the trial and how it affected us."

Kinyera didn't solely dedicate himself to land justice to help his family but also many other Ugandans who often find themselves in similar positions. The BBC reports that nearly 33 to 50% of all landholders are involved in unlawful land disputes.

The 24-year-old defender added that many displaced Ugandans who are sent to camps return to find their homes captive.

"The issue is so widespread that an entire branch of the high court is just dedicated to land disputes," he said.

Kinyera also noted that while he's enthralled for his father, the lost time has caused him to miss valuable years of building up the land and planting vegetation.

"Justice delayed is justice denied," he said. "My father is 82 years and he can't do much with the land now. It's up to us children to pick up from where he left."
