As if ABC had a choice, Abbott Elementary has been renewed for season 2.

The renewal news came in a note from Principal Ava, played by Janelle James.

The series, from Warner Bros. Television and 20th Television for a second season is ABC’s #1 new comedy in 2 years in Adults 18-49, and the season’s #1 comedy in Adults 18-49 (tied with CBS’ Ghosts).”

Per ABC, “the time-period premiere and second telecast of ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” hit 9.0 million Total Viewers and scored a 2.93 rating among Adults 18-49 after 35 days of viewing across linear and digital platforms” and the second episode of the show “stood as ABC’s highest-rated comedy telecast (new or returning) in nearly 2 years with Adults 18-49 (2.93 rating)”

Created by Quinta Brunson, the series stars Brunson, James, Tyler James Williams, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti and Sheryl Lee Ralph.

In the show, “a group of dedicated, passionate teachers — and a slightly tone-deaf principal — are brought together in a Philadelphia public school where, despite the odds stacked against them, they are determined to help their students succeed in life. Though these incredible educators may be outnumbered and underfunded, they love what they do — even if they don’t love the school district’s less-than-stellar attitude toward educating children.

New episodes of the show return March 22.
