A&E Networks Orders Feature Doc On End Of Apartheid In South Africa, For 2013 Global Release

History, formerly known as The History Channel (a property of A&E Networks), has ordered a feature documentary about the end of apartheid in South Africa, which will be broadcast internationally in 2013.

To be titled Miracle Rising: South Africaindependent production house Combined Artists (a South African company) has been commissioned to produce the 93-minute film, which will commemorate the 23rd anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s release from prison.

Furthermore, the film will…

… track the story of the country’s political transformation, climaxing in its first democratic elections in 1994. It includes personal accounts from figures including Bill Clinton and Desmond Tutu as well as many unsung heroes…. it will focus on the four years between Mandela’s release in 1990 and the 1994 elections as the country avoided collapsing into civil war and overcame racial hatred.

Combined Artists promises a documentary that will not only focus on Mandela, and South Africa specifically, but will also cover the matter from a global pespective, during those years of struggle that lead to political and societal transformation, which has been described as a ‘miracle’ of its time, hence the title of the film, which will be released around the world, in keeping with the film's approach, in 2013.

Said A&E Network’s vice president of programming Adam Macdonald: “I’m hugely proud to be involved in this momentous documentary. We believe this historical event in South Africa is a truly inspirational programme for our global audiences.”

I should note that Idris Elba's Nelson Mandela biopic is also due out in 2013.
