On the May 15 episode of Tamron Hall, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air actor Alfonso Ribeiro discussed the recent cast reunion as well as the legacy of the late James Avery, his co-star who portrayed Uncle Phil on the ’90s cult classic.

“Will wanted to promote one of his newer social media platforms and was like ‘this would be a great way to do it and get together,'” Ribeiro said of the cast’s reunion to commemorate the 30th anniversary of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. “And of course for the rest of us, it was like ‘anytime we can get together and hang out, why not?’”

Ribeiro also reflected on his relationship with James Avery, revealing that the late actor’s impact didn’t hit close to him until his passing.

“It didn’t really hit me until very close to his passing. I was like ‘wait a minute, he played my dad on Fresh Prince, he played my dad on In The House. We did another little pilot where we did like a five-episode independent deal, he played my dad on that,’” Ribiero said. “And I went ‘I don’t think I’ve ever had someone play my dad other than James Avery.’ He was just an amazing, amazing man. The intellect, the love of the arts, his passion for life – he meant everything to us.”

Ribiero also noted that with Avery’s death, a reboot of The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air is highly unlikely. As reported last year, a spinoff series from Smith is currently in development.

The former Dancing With The Stars champion also took time to discuss his viral #DoTheDanceChallenge, which saw fans do their best take on the iconic Carlton dance.

“We got a really great response, it was really fun,” he said. “I really wanted people during this time to have something that’s nostalgic and has a great feeling for people. If I could add that to society right now, why not?”
