A few months ago, several reports came out that Annapurna Pictures, the Megan Ellison-led production company and newbie distributor would be campaigning for Algee Smith’s performance in Detroit for consideration in the Lead Actor category for upcoming award ceremonies (Oscars, Globe, SAG).

Now, the news is officially confirmed with ‘For Your Consideration (FYC)’ advertisements coming out, listing Smith for consideration in Lead Actor, and John Boyega and Will Poulter for supporting.

Detroit had major buzz prior to release and appeared on many potential Oscar lists, for best film, director and potential acting nods for Boyega and Poulter. However, upon release, the film had a polarizing impact on folks, with many criticizing the film as a moving torture picture and others calling out the fact that it did not have a black director at the helm.

Despite this, universally, most critics praised the performances of the actors, particularly Smith, who is the true standout of the film and deserves to be noticed for his work here. Boyega in particular, along with Anthony Mackie, appeared on most of the film’s marketing, not Algee Smith — or even Jacob Latimore, who were the actors at the crux of the film. This was probably done to give the film more mainstream appeal (considering Boyega is in the Star Wars franchise), but Smith was clearly lead in this movie and had he been pegged as such to begin with, he may have stood a chance, despite the film’s criticisms. When you think of Detroit, you can now only picture Boyega, since all of the promos featured him. However, the chances of Smith, who also stood out in BET’s The New Edition Story miniseries and will star with Amandla Stenberg in next year’s feature, The Hate U Give, are slim to nothing.

Annapurna also seems to be making a last-ditch effort for Detroit to be considered during awards season, as it will be back in theaters in 10 cities on December 1.
