For Black History Month, AMC Theaters is amplifying the culture by offering $5 movie tickets for select films at participating theaters.
Among some of the films included in the offer include Gina Prince-Bythewood’s epic The Woman King, Chinonye Chukwu’s acclaimed historical drama Till and Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The offer, which begins on Feb. 3 and ends on March 2, will see each film being shown in theaters for $5 for one week only.
“Over the years, Black filmmakers and actors have given the world some of the most inspiring and captivating cinematic experiences, and that tradition has continued the past year with some truly amazing films that span just about every genre imaginable,” read a statement released by the company. “AMC Theaters is giving moviegoers the opportunity to revisit some of the most recent biographical dramas, military epics, and dramatic action movies created by or starring outstanding Black filmmakers and actors.”
As directed by Chukwu, Till tells the true story of “Mamie Till Mobley’s relentless pursuit of justice for her 14-year-old son, Emmett Till, who, in 1955, was lynched while visiting his cousins in Mississippi. In Mamie’s poignant journey of grief turned to action, we see the universal power of a mother’s ability to change the world.” For her performance as Mamie Till-Mobley, Danielle Deadwyler was nominated in the Best Actress category at both the Critics Choice and Screen Actors Guild Awards, but was shockingly snubbed in the Best Actress category at the Oscars. Till is running from Feb. 3 to Feb. 9.
Starring Viola Davis and Thuso Mbedu, The Woman King chronicles the Agojie, the real-life all-female warrior unit that protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey in the 1820s. The film exceeded expectations and topped the North American box office in its opening weekend, grossing 94.3 million worldwide. The Woman King will run in theaters from Feb. 17 to Feb. 23.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever chronicles Shuri’s (Letitia Wright) ascension to the title of “Black Panther” following the death of her brother T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman). For her performance as Queen Ramonda, Angela Bassett is currently nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the first actor to earn an acting Oscar nomination for an MCU film. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will air in theaters from Feb. 24 to March 2.
