If early predictions are correct, Willie Spence is likely to become the winner for season 19 of American Idol. If this happens, history will be made and the show would crown Spence as the first black male winner since Ruben Studdard’s victory in 2003.

GoldDerby has analyzed the data from a plethora of fans of American Idol. According to the data collected, Spence, the 21-year old Georgia native, will be the victor in May’s finale. His closest contender is Grace Kinstler.

A Spence win could break the apparent “curse” black male contestants have had since Studdard’s victory against Clay Aiken. No Black male has made it to the finale as either the runner-up or winner since then. The show has had several Black women winners including Fantasia Barrino, Jordan Sparks, Candice Glover and Just Sam.

Spencer became a fan-favorite before American Idol when he covered Rihanna’s “Diamonds.” He chose to sing this song for his audition, landing him on the show.

Spencer’s performances include “I Was Here,” “Wind Beneath My Wings,” “The Prayer” with Katharine McPhee, “Set Fire to the Rain,” “Diamonds” (once more) and “Stand Up” from HarrietThe latter performance during Oscar week garnered him immense favor.

American Idol has been one of the longest-running music competition reality shows. With nearly twenty seasons in the game, American Idol has produced some of today’s favorite artists such as Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and of course, the “velvet teddy bear” himself, Ruben Studdard.

The finale airs in mid-May. At the moment, Spence’s odds are 11/1 odds of winning. GoldDerby’s current list of odds for the top ten are as follows:

1. Willie Spence — 11/1

2. Grace Kinstler — 13/1

3. Casey Bishop — 14/1

4. Chayce Beckham — 18/1

5. Comeback Contestant — 66/1

6. Alyssa Wray — 68/1

7. Hunter Metts — 97/1

8-10. Cassandra Coleman, Caleb Kennedy, Deshawn Goncalves — 100/1
