Several big names have boarded as producers for on Brodway play American Son, starring former Scandal star Kerry Washington and Steven Pasquale. The new producers include Shonda Rhimes, Jada Pinkett Smith, Gabrielle Union, Nnamdi Asomugha and Steve Stoute. They join Kerry Washington’s production company Simpson Street,  Jeffrey Richards and Will Trice. Kenny Leon is the director.

The play, which explores the intersection of systemic racism and law enforcement in America, sees Washington portray Kendra Ellis-Connor, the mother of a missing child who joins forces with the boy’s father (Pasquale) at a Florida police station to get answers.

The play chronicles Washington’s character as she tries to cope with and determine the circumstances surrounding her son’s disappearance when his car is found during a traffic stop.

American Son will begin its run on Broadway on Saturday, Oct. 6.
