Anthony Mackie is 1/3 of a trio (along with Margaret Qualley and Danny Huston) who will star in a new Netflix sci-fi film titled “IO,” from director Jonathan Halpery, which follows a teenage girl’s coming of age while examining the dangers of humanity’s current relationship with the planet.

The project was developed at the Sundance Institute’s Writers Lab and the Sundance Institute Catalyst Forum.

As one of the last people to survive a post-cataclysmic and now-abandoned earth, Mackie has signed up to play Micah, who’s described as a complicated and mysterious figure on his way to the imminent shuttle launch – the last shuttle off the planet to the distant human space colony – who makes Sam (Qualley) question whether she can really alter Earth’s fate.

Qualley stars as Sam Walden, a teenager who is racing to find a cure for what led to earth’s destruction, before the last shuttle off the planet leaves her stranded behind.

Jonathan Halpery is directing from a Sundance-workshopped script originally penned by Clay Jeter, Charles Spano and Will Basanta.

Mandalay Pictures and Untitled Entertainment are producing “IO.”

Filming is underway in France.

Netflix will release the movie next year.

Mackie is repped by with UTA and Inspire Entertainment.
