The upcoming Broadway musical Holler If Ya Hear Me, directed by the always busy Kenny Leon will begin previews May 29 at the Palace Theater, before it officially opens on June 19. 

In case you haven’t been following any of the updates of this stage production, Holler, is not a stage biopic of Tupac Shakur, but is only inspired by the lyrics of the late rapper. The musical, penned by Todd Kreidler, will chronicle challenges and victories of several inner city residents.

In the latest development, the musical has cast artist/musician/poet Saul Williams in the lead, and he will be joined by Tony award winner Tonya Pinkins (Jelly’s Last Jam, Caroline or Change). 

Rounding out the cast are thespians Christopher Jackson (In the Heights, After Midnight), John Earl Jelks (Radio Golf) and Saycon Sengbloh (Motown, Fela!).

Here’s the official synopsis:

The world inside Tupac Shakur’s music and lyrics blazes to life in a non-biographical story about friendship, family, revenge, change and hope. Inner city lives struggle for peace against the daily challenges they face in this entertaining original musical. Through the poetry of one of the 20th century’s most influential and culturally prominent voices, we are given a window into realities of the streets still relevant today.
