Time sure flies by! I’ve been following Aunjanue Ellis’ career probably since "High Incident," the 1990s ABC police drama series she co-starred in, that was canceled after 2 seasons). It’s kind of odd to now see her playing someone’s mother – specifically, 29-year-old Nicole Beharie’s mother, in Fox’s "Sleepy Hollow." We’re all aging; a fact of life, for better or worse.
Ellis joined the cast of "Sleepy Hollow" over the summer, to play another surprising figure from Abbie’s (Nicole Beharie’s) past – as already noted, her mother, who’s supposed to be long-dead. She makes her first appearance on the show during tonight’s episode, which, as TV Line reveals, in an interview with Beharie, will be "all Abbie, all the time." So those of you who’ve been fretting about the character being sidelined, in favor of Ichabod’s own story, should be somewhat pleased with this news. Yes? No?
Fans of the series will know that Abbie and her sister Jenny (played by Lyndie Greenwood) were both taken from their mother, Lori, as children, because of Lori’s mental condition, and became part of the foster care system. The girls thought their mother was crazy and possibly dangerous, and that she killed herself years prior. However, new information is revealed this season that will link the sisters with the truth about their mother, as played by Aunjanue Ellis, who makes her inaugural showing tonight, when "Sleepy Hollow" airs at 9/8c on Fox. The episode is aptly titled titled "Mama."
And after watching the below preview and clip from the episode, I couldn’t help but remember another current TV series starring a black woman character with "I thought my mother was dead" issues to tackle (guess which show I’m talking about):
