ITVS, the leading funder and incubator of independent films, is celebrating its 25th anniversary at this year’s International Documentary Association’s Getting Real Conference, which kicks off today, September 27, and runs through the 29th.

IDA’s Getting Real ‘16 is described as a unique gathering of documentary filmmakers and industry professionals that brings the documentary community together for presentations and workshops about the filmmaking process, and challenges facing the documentary ecosystem.

ITVS will lead a discussion on its signature filmmaking process hosted by Noland Walker, Independent Lens Co-Curator and ITVS senior content director, featuring ITVS-funded filmmaker Pete Nicks (“The Waiting Room”). ITVS will also participate in sessions with exclusively filmmaker-only audiences with Lyric Cabral (“[T]error”) and Stanley Nelson (“Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution”) to highlight the challenges and success of bringing films from idea to launch. Wednesday evening, ITVS will host an evening reception to celebrate 25 years of producing independent films that spark social dialogue, hosted by actor and filmmaker, Ravi Patel.

Getting Real ‘16 will introduce an all-new program that will challenge assumptions and bring about lasting change: Focus on Art, Diversity, and Sustainability.

Keynote Speakers include: Steve James, Ava DuVernay, Marcia Smith, Shola Lynch, Laura Poitras, James Risen, Raoul Peck, and Grace Lee.

“I’m incredibly proud of the work ITVS has done over the past 25 years,” said Sally Jo Fifer, president and CEO of ITVS. “In 1991, Congress charged us with producing creative documentaries that give voice to underserved communities and distribute them to the public for free, and we have fulfilled that charge. Just last week, we won our 28th Emmy in the New and Documentary Category. We will continue to build on our success and produce films that reflect society and inspire thoughtful conversation, well into the next 25 years and beyond.”

Getting Real will take place over three unforgettable days of: inspiring keynotes, vital conversations, practical workshops, dynamic presentations, insider knowledge, and structured networking.

“Together. Stronger” was the ethos of Getting Real ’16.
