Issa Rae is headed to Bollywood with her new ColorCreative project, Badmash.

Rae and her ColorCreative production partners Sara Rastogi and Deniese Davis are developing Badmash from Shivani Rawat’s ShivHans Pictures.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Umbrella Academy and Daredevil writer Sneha Koorse pitched the idea of a “darkly comedic noir” that draws from the revelation that gangsters have used Bollywood films as a front for money laundering. The film will be set in Mumbai during the 1980s, at the height of crime within the Bollywood industry. The film will be in the English language and also feature a South Asian cast.

Rae told The Hollywood Reporter that the film upholds her production company’s tenets.

“We started ColorCreative to give a platform to stories that the traditional studio system tends to overlook, stories like Badmash,” she said.

Rawat also called the film a “unique and engaging story set during a fascinating chapter in Bollywood history.”
