For those who’ve been asking me about the future of “Being Mary Jane,” worry no more.

Announced today, BET has brought on Will Packer (to executive produce), and “The Good Wife” co-executive producer Erica Shelton Kodish (to serve as showrunner and executive produce as well) for the series’ upcoming 4th season.

“Being Mary Jane” was created and executive produced by Mara Brock Akil, and executive produced and directed by Salim Akil. But as you know, the couple inked an overall deal with Warner Bros TV, where they are now set up. After that news broke a couple of years ago, a big question many had was what it meant for their hit BET series, “Being Mary Jane.”

Now you know.

The Akils will continue to receive an executive producer credit on the series, although they won’t necessarily have their stamp on it, as they’ll be busy creating new projects at WB.

Production on the new season is set to begin in Atlanta, GA later this year, which means, don’t expect anything until sometime in 2017.

Gabrielle Union leads a cast of regulars that also included Richard Roundtree, Margaret Avery, Lisa Vidal, Richard Brooks, Raven Goodwin, B.J. Britt, Aaron D. Spears, Latarsha Rose and Stephen Bishop. No word at this time on who will/will not be returning.

“’Being Mary Jane’ is full of characters and stories about which BET viewers are passionate. We knew it would take special talent to further this very important mission and we’re lucky to have found them in this dynamic duo,” says Stephen Hill, President of Programming, BET Networks. “Will’s a master producer and storyteller and Erica is a dynamic writer whose experience in developing complex, multidimensional women makes her the ideal scribe to continue Mary Jane’s journey. We look forward to sharing this next chapter of the series with our audience.”

Erica Shelton Kodish recently wrapped the final season of “The Good Wife” as co-executive producer. Her previous producing credits include “Covert Affairs,” “Hawthorne,” and “Cold Case.”

“I’m honored to have an opportunity to partner with Will Packer, Gabrielle Union, and BET to create stories for ‘Being Mary Jane’,” says Erica Shelton Kodish. “Mara Brock Akil has created a show that has a unique ability to address issues relevant to black women and I’m thrilled to be in a position to tell those stories.” Shelton Kodish is represented by Creative Artists Agency, Helena Heyman at Industry Entertainment, and attorney Bruce Gellman.
