Berlinale 2012 Preview - South African Crime Drama "Man On Ground"

The 2012 Berlin International Film Festival continues to gradually unveil its lineup of films, with the festival just a few weeks away, beginning on February 9, 2012.

Here's another curious title to add to your list of films by African filmmakers to see at the festival (those of you who are making the trip (S&A won't be there unfortunately).

This one is titled Man On Ground, and is written and directed by Nigerian filmmaker Akin Omotoso.

The film made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival last year in the Contemporary World Cinema category.

TIFF described Man On Ground as follows:

A bold and exacting portrayal of rising xenophobia in South Africa, Omotoso casts the story of a young Nigerian man living in the African refugee tenements of Johannesburg who disappears against the background of animosity against immigrants flaring into violent rioting. In the span of a single night, his brother, on a short visit from London, tries to elucidate the mystery.

Hakeem Kae-Kazim and Fana Mokoena star. Both have acted in several stateside TV shows and movies, from Criminal Minds, Pirates of the Caribbean, 24 and others.

Glad to see more and more atypical titles from black African filmmakers making international splashes, much like what Viva Riva! did last year post… its 2010 TIFF debut.

Man On Ground will screen at the Berlinal in the Panorama section, next month,
