Awards season is pushing forward and a welcomed surprise came down when the New York Film Critics Circle announced winners for 2019 on Wednesday.
Lupita Nyong’o was awarded Best Actress by the group for her performance in Jordan Peele’s Us. This comes just a year after Regina Hall became the first Black woman to win Best Actress in the group’s then 83-year history.
This is a key win for Nyong’o and potentially means that her chances of getting an Oscar nomination for the film have increased. Hall, who was nominated for the critically-acclaimed indie film Support the Girls, also garnered nominations at last year’s Gotham Awards and Spirit Awards but this did not net an Oscar nomination.
Atlantics from Mati Diop was also awarded Best First Film.
