Billy Porter gave a brief but poignant introduction to Lil Nas X's performance at the MTV VMAs on Sunday.

"The world wasn't ready for all of this Black boy joy…It's a new day and I'm so thankful to have lived long enough to see it," he said while reflecting on the significance of the artist for the LGBTQ+ community.

The crowd at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn roared in unison as Porter euphorically invited Lil Nas X to the stage. The 22-year-old singer then appeared in front of the crowd in a full marching band costume. He also brought along Jack Harlow, who collaborated with the artist on the song “Industry Baby,” according to Glamour.

As the pair performed on the VMA stage, Lil Nas X also gave fans a sample of "Montero (Call Me by Your Name)."

Although Lil Nas X has faced countless critics throughout his career, Porter has been one of his more vocal supporters. In an interview with Tamron Hall last year, Porter said he admires the young artist's style. The "Show Me" singer said he wishes he had someone like him to look up to when he was younger.

Porter talked more about his own upbringing in an interview with The Guardian earlier this year.

"When I was young, my church community said that I would never be blessed as long as I chose to be gay," he revealed.
