In 2019, Porter made history when he became the first openly gay Black man to be nominated and win in any lead acting category at the Primetime Emmys for his portrayal of Pray Tell in the FX drama Pose. The Grammy, Tony and Emmy winning actor is now spilling details on his role as the Fairy Godmother in Sony’s live-action Cinderella.

In an interview with CBS News, Porter revealed his rendition of the character is genderless. “It hit me when I was on the set last week, how profound it is that I am playing the Fairy Godmother — they call it the Fab G,” Porter said. “Magic has no gender.”

Porter spoke about how Sony’s rendition of Cinderella will appeal to the LGBTQIA community.

“This is a classic, this is a classic fairytale for a new generation,” he said. “I think that the new generation is really ready. The kids are ready. It’s the grownups that are slowing stuff down.”

Porter will star alongside Camilla Cabello, who will play the title role of Cinderella. The film, which will premiere on February 5, 2021, will also star Missy Elliott, Idina Menzel, Nicholas Galitzine, Maddie Baillio, Charlotte Spencer, John Mulaney, Romesh Ranganathan and James Corden.
