The 72nd Annual Tony Awards aired Sunday night (May 10), recognizing Broadway excellence over the past year.

The slate of nominees this year was rather diverse, with several black actors receiving nods, including: Denzel Washington (Eugene O’Neill’s The Iceman Cometh), Condola Rashad, (Saint Joan) LaChanze, (Summer: The Donna Summer Musical), Brian Tyree Henry, (Lobby Hero), Noma Dumezweni, (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two), Ariana DeBose, (Summer: The Donna Summer Musical), Hailey Kilgore, (Once On This Island), Lauren Ridloff, (Children of a Lesser God) and Joshua Henry (Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel).

While no black actors picked up a Tony trophy at the Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban-hosted affair, black excellence still manifested itself through the black actors and actresses who showed up and showed out on the red carpet and during the ceremony!
