Two Black veterinarians are ready to inspire younger children to take care of animals.

Dr. Vernard Hodges and Dr. Terrence Ferguson, two vets and owners of Critter Fixer Veterinary Hospital, will have a show on Nat Geo Wild rightfully called Critter Fixers.

Hodges spoke about the upcoming show to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC), saying that at first, he thought the initial call from National Geographic was a prank. But after four months, he and Ferguson became the hosts of a brand new show in which they will treat animals both in and out of the hospital. They also hope that their show will inspire more Black viewers to enter into the veterinary field.

“Only 1.6% of veterinarians are African American,” said Hodges, who added that representation was “very important, and the production company, Nat Geo, has been great.”

“I definitely hope we can encourage young men or young women if they are African American that this is something they can accomplish if that is their dream,” Ferguson said to the Macon Telegraph, according to the AJC.

The two have already filmed six episodes for their first season, which will air this fall.
