Annapurna Pictures has released the first trailer for the upcoming film “Detroit” – a project that has been kept mostly underwraps until now (we didn’t even know what it was going to be called; before today, it was referred to as Kathryn Bigelow’s “Untitled Detroit Project”).

With an ensemble cast that includes John Boyega, Will Poulter, Algee Smith, Jacob Latimore, Jason Mitchell, Hannah Murray, Kaitlyn Dever, Jack Reynor, Ben O’Toole, Joseph David Jones, Ephraim Sykes, Leon Thomas III, Nathan Davis Jr., Peyton Alex Smith, Malcolm David Kelley, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Chris Chalk, Jeremy Strong, Laz Alonzo, Austin Hebert, Miguel Pimentel, Kris Davis, with John Krasinski and Anthony Mackie, Bigelow directed the crime drama from an original screenplay by Mark Boal.

Bigelow is also producing with Boal, as well as Annapurna’s Megan Ellison and Matthew Budman, and Colin Wilson, with Greg Shapiro executive producing.

“Detroit” tells the gripping story of one of the darkest moments during the civil unrest that took place over five haunting summer days in 1967. The film explores systemic racism in urban Detroit.

An August 4, 2017 release date is set; this year marks the 50th anniversary of the riots.

The feature, Oscar-winning director Bigelow’s tenth as a director, is financed by Annapurna Pictures. It’s also on the S&A Oscar 2018 predictions list.

Bigelow is a two time Oscar winner for producing and directing “The Hurt Locker.” Boal is a two time Oscar-winner for producing and writing “The Hurt Locker.” Bigelow, Boal and Ellison’s previous collaboration, “Zero Dark Thirty,” received five Oscar nominations including best picture and best screenplay.

The first trailer for “Detroit” follows below; above and below are first official images from the film:
