'Captain Marvel 2' Taps 'Candyman' Director Nia DaCosta To Helm MCU Sequel

Marvel's Captain Marvel 2 has found its director in Nia DaCosta. The Little Woods director, who helms the upcoming Candyman film, will helm the project. She will be the first Black woman to helm a Marvel film.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck directed the first film. Breaking the news first, Deadline reports, "DaCosta seemed to have the edge for some time even as she and others met with Marvel chief Kevin Feige over the weekend."  Megan McDonnell, a writer on the upcoming MCU Disney+ series, WandaVision penned the script. Brie Larson is returning to star.

The '90s-set first film followed the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom. The first film also starred  Jude Law, Lashana Lynch, Ben Mendelsohn, Annette Bening and Gemma Chan.

After being delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, Candyman is set for release in 2021 via Universal.
