Both shows had recipes for success. Happy Together had Damon Wayans Jr., who was 2018’s most in-demand comedy actor of pilot season, alongside Amber Stevens West. Fam had The Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev as its lead actress and compiled a cast including Tone Bell, Sheryl Lee Ralph and one of Pamela Adlon’s daughters, Odessa.

Fam chronicled a woman’s dreams of an upstanding life with her new fiancé and his upstanding family, but she must deal with her younger train wreck half-sister who comes to live with her to escape their train wreck of a father.

Happy Together was a comedy about a 30-something happily married couple who began to reconnect with their younger, cooler selves when Cooper, an exuberant young pop star drawn to their super ordinary suburban life, unexpectedly moves in with them.
