Chadwick Boseman, Unlike Other Marvel Lead Superheroes, Was Offered His Role On The Spot Without Auditioning

Chadwick Boseman is on another level.

In a recent Variety spread promoting the release of Black Panther, the industry publication did a feature on the Black Panther star and the film’s director, Ryan Coogler.

One of the many nuggets revealed in the feature that while Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pratt all had to audition for their Marvel roles, Boseman didn’t.

Because of his other on-screen transformation, execs only thought of Boseman to be the first actor to play a live-action T’Challa.

“I think it was 24 hours between saying his name in a creative story meeting and talking to his agent and getting on the phone with him,” said Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios.

Boseman received his offer on the spot, accepting it via speakerphone while in Germany doing press for Get On Up, in which he portrayed James Brown.

You can read the full feature on Boseman and Coogler at Variety.
