Charles Burnett-Directed Stage Play "Mulatto: A Never Ending Saga" Getting Film Treatment

Killer Of Sheep director Charles Burnett's 2010 stage directorial effort – a 1-woman show starring Juliette Fairley, titled Mulatto: A Never Ending Saga – might be becoming a feature film, with Fairley herself playing the lead role, and Michael Pinckney directing.

A 10-minute promo for the project, directed by Pinckney, is said to be heading to the 2012 Sundance Film Festival in search of financial backers.

As a recap (we profiled the play before its 2011 debut)… the play, Fairley's 3rd 1-woman show, centers on the dysfunctional marriage of a black G.I. and his white French wife, as we follow her assimilation into white American society, and the impact it has on their bi-racial daughter's attempts to get married.

As it's a 1-woman show, Fairley, who wrote the play, played all the characters, under Charles Burnett's direction; however I suspect she won't be doing so in the filmed version.

It’s very exciting to watch the film develop with characters and a script that I elaborated on in my imagination after experiences in my life,” said Fairley.

I've yet to see Pinckney's debut feature, You're Nobody Til Somebody Kills You (a film we've profiled on S&A), so I can't speak to his talents; although he has industry experience, working as second unit first & second assistant director on films like Tower Heist, as well as a number of Spike Lee films like Inside Man, 25th Hour, Bamboozled, and others). It'll reportedly be released sometime this year, so I hope it comes my way.

In the meantime, Mulatto: A Never Ending Saga begins its own journey…

Anyone see Fairley's play?
