'Charm City Kings' Moves To HBO Max From Sony Pictures Entertainment

Charm City Kings is the move. The Sundance Award-winning coming-of-age film has been sold by Sony Pictures Entertainment to upcoming WarnerMedia streaming service, HBO Max. Sony Pictures Classics was previously going to release the film for Sony Pictures Entertainment.

It was originally set for release in April but it was pushed to August due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Now, Sony has sold the film to HBO Max where it will debut later this year. It stars  Jahi Di’Allo Winston, Meek Mill, Will Catlett, Donielle Hansley, Kezii Curtis, Chino, Lakeyria “Wheelie Queen” Doughty and Teyonah Parris.

“Charm City Kings is such an exciting and vibrant visual experience that we are thrilled to debut on HBO Max. The filmmakers and electric cast have put together something truly special,” says Executive Vice President of Original Films, Jessie Henderson.

The official description: Mouse (Winston) desperately wants to join The Midnight Clique, an infamous group of Baltimore dirt bike riders who rule the summertime streets. When Midnight’s leader, Blax (Mill), takes 14-year-old Mouse under his wing, Mouse soon finds himself torn between the straight-and-narrow and a road filled with fast money and violence.

Our Sundance review reads, "With themes that sit at a three-way intersection of teen angst, toxic masculinity deconstruction and racial marginalization, Charm City Kings is one of the most impressive films of the year. It has been some time since we’ve seen a gritty, full-hearted urban crime tale the likes of films like Boyz n the Hood and Juice. Charm City Kings joins that pantheon."

Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, the film was written by Sherman Payne wit ha story by Chris Boyd, Kirk Sullivan and Barry Jenkins. Hailing from Overbook Entertainment, the film was produced by Caleeb Pinkett, Clarence Hammond, Marc Bienstock. Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith and James Lassiter executive produced the film.
