Cherie Johnson To Star In 'Punky Brewster' Sequel Series In Development At NBCUniversal's Peacock

Cherie Johnson, most known for her roles as Maxine in Family Matters and Cherie in Punky Brewster, has signed on for the sequel series of the latter that is in development at NBCUniversal's upcoming streaming service, Peacock.

She would rejoin star, Soleil Moon Frye, in the potential series.

Considered a sequel series to the parent 80s sitcom, the sequel series would be a multicamera hybrid and center on Punky, "now a single mother of three trying to get her life back on track when she meets a young girl who reminds her a lot of her younger self."

According to Deadline, who broke the news of her attachment to the series, Johnson would "reprise her role as Cherie, best friend of Punky (Frye) since they were kids. In fact, they’re more like sisters. To Punky’s kids, she’s Aunt Cherie. Her life-long friendship with Punky inspired her to become a social worker, helping orphaned kids."

The original series ran for four seasons from 1984-1988 on both NBC and syndication.
