Children of Blood and Bone has found a director!

A film adaptation of the popular YA fantasy novel from Tomi Adeyemi, which is set at Fox 2000, has tapped Rick Famuyiwa, the director of films like The Wood, Brown Sugar and Dope. David Magee is the script writer.

When Fox acquired it, the novel hadn’t even been published yet, showing major confidence in Adeyemi and the work. Adeyemi’s seven-figure deal with Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group for the book was one of the biggest YA debut novel publishing deals ever.

Children of Blood and Bone is the first novel in a planned trilogy. The second book in trilogy will be released in June.

Here’s the official description of the novel: Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls. But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope. Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good. Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers and her growing feelings for an enemy.

Famuyiwa, who recently directed Kerry Washington as Anita Hill in the HBO film, Confirmation, is also directing episodes of the Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, for Disney+.

THR first reported the news of Famuyiwa’s attachment.
