The highly-anticipated TIFF selection Concrete Cowboy now has its Netflix premiere date. The Idris Elba and Caleb McLaughlin-led Black cowboy tale will hit the streaming service on April 2.

The film, inspired by the novel Ghetto Cowboy, also stars Jharrel Jerome, Byron Bowers, Lorraine Toussaint, Clifford “Method Man” Smith.

Here’s the description: When fifteen-year-old Cole (Caleb McLaughlin) is expelled from school in Detroit, he is sent to North Philadelphia to live with Harp (Idris Elba), his estranged father. Harp finds solace in rehabilitating horses for inner city cowboys at the Fletcher Street Stables, a real-life black urban horsemanship community that has provided a safe haven for the neighborhood residents for more than 100 years. Torn between his growing respect for his father’s community and his reemerging friendship with troubled cousin Smush (Jharrel Jerome), Cole begins to reprioritize his life as the stables themselves are threatened by encroaching gentrification.

Concrete Cowboy is directed by Ricky Staub and was written by Ricky Staub and Dan Walser. It is produced by Tucker Tooley, Lee Daniels, Idris Elba, Dan Walser, Jeff Waxman and Jennifer Madeloff.

Our TIFF review reads, “The performances from McLaughlin, Elba, Jerome and Touissaint are more than enough to keep you engaged, as well as the real-life Fletcher Street denizens […] After the film’s narrative concludes, the credits are devoted to the real-life subjects speaking about their history and what they are going through in the present-day. They breathe an air of authenticity into the film, adding to the larger message of community for this powerful ode to this neighborhood, subculture and the Black urban riders that are more than deserving of recognition.”
