Though we’ve pretty much known this for a while now, Danai Gurira is going back to Wakanda — officially.

News surfaced via a deep dive from a feature in The Hollywood Reporter on the industry’s power lawyers for the year. The section on Jamie Mandelbaum revealed Gurira’s involvement in “an origin spinoff series for Disney+.” There is no official confirmation that this series is the same one in development by Ryan Coogler, which would focus more on Wakanda and its people rather than just the Black Panther and royal family. However, it stands to reason that this is the same series. The series would come after the Black Panther sequel set for theaters, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. It will see Gurira reprise her role as Okoye.

If our thinking is correct, then we know quite a bit about what the Disney+ series would entail. As we reported in February, Coogler and his production company Proximity Media will develop several TV series with Disney under a five-year deal, with the Wakanda-based series being first, focusing on the characters that define the fictional kingdom.

“It’s an honor to be partnering with The Walt Disney Company. Working with them on Black Panther was a dream come true. As avid consumers of television, we couldn’t be happier to be launching our television business with Bob Iger, Dana Walden and all the amazing studios under the Disney umbrella,” said Coogler regarding the deal. “We look forward to learning, growing, and building a relationship with audiences all over the world through the Disney platforms. We are especially excited that we will be taking our first leap with Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and their partners at Marvel Studios where we will be working closely with them on select MCU shows for Disney+. We’re already in the mix on some projects that we can’t wait to share,” stated Ryan Coogler on behalf of Proximity Media.”

Having Okoye as the central character of the series also makes sense, since she was one of the standout characters from the Black Panther movie and her compatriot Ayo (Florence Kasumba) had a key role in Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Ayo could be used as a character bridge between the rest of the MCU television universe and Black Panther. Ayo’s presence also helps audiences get used to seeing Wakanda without Chadwick Boseman, who played T’Challa and died of colon cancer in 2020.

Overall, it will be exciting to see Gurira reprise her role as the Wakandan general on Disney+.
