There’s still a lot of mystery surrounding Daniel Kaluuya’s Barney film project. But Kaluuya says the film is something we desperately need right now.

Kaluuya told Entertainment Weekly that he feels the world needs to embrace the purple dinosaur’s philosophy of loving everyone.

“Barney taught us, ‘I love you, you love me. Won’t you say you love me too?’ That’s one of the first songs I remember, and what happens when that isn’t true?” he said. “I thought that was really heartbreaking. I have no idea why but it feels like that makes sense. It feels like there’s something unexpected that can be poignant but optimistic. Especially at this time right now, I think that’s really, really needed.”

Kaluuya’s discussion of if Barney’s motto “isn’t true” has been a logline that’s been repeated earlier when news of this film project first broke in 2019. While we still don’t have much to go on as far as what Kaluuya’s film will look like, his statement to Entertainment Weekly does give us a clue that the film will be much more sentimental than, say, horrific or otherwise childhood-ruining.
