‘Dear White People’ helmer Justin Simien has come aboard the TV series adaptation of Flashdance at Paramount+. Simien is under a deal at Paramount Television. Studios. The streamer announced the news during its Television Critics Association press day on Tuesday.
The project was first announced back in 2020 and Tracy McMillan was attached to it at that that time and Angela Robinson was set to direct. Also at this time, the network was said to then be developing series based on Fatal Attraction, Flashdance, Love Story, The Parallax View and The Italian Job. No other updates about the other series came down on Tuesday, but Lizzy Caplan and Joshua Jackson were recently announced to star in the Fatal Attraction series.
McMillan’s take on Flashdance would have focused on “a Black woman struggling to make her mark in the ballet world and will pick up from where the story left off — but in present day.”
Jennifer Beals stared in the 1983 original film as a woman aspiring to become a ballerina. The film became a cult-classic and inspired several other ’80s films.
The logline for Simien’s take has not been revealed yet.
