Diggy Simmons has been promoted to series regular status for the upcoming third season of Grown-ish, Shadow and Act has learned.

Freeform’s Black-ish spinoff, which is currently on a midseason break, got an early renewal for a Season 3, which is expected to premiere in 2020.

Simmons quickly rose the ranks on the show, first being introduced for a multi-episode guest arc in Season 1. He was upped to recurring status in Season 2 before his most recent promotion. Simmons portrays Doug, the love interest of Jazz (Chloe Bailey). The network says: After joining the gang as Jazz’s boyfriend Doug, he quickly became a staple to the friend group, getting close to Aaron and the rest of Hawkins’ Hall. Though the spring finale ended with lots of tension with Jazz, he remains a big part of the group of friends at CalU.

Grown-ish follows Zoey (Shahidi), Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) popular, entitled, stylish and socially active 17-year-old daughter from Black-ish, as she heads into her freshman year of college. Shahidi is also joined onscreen by series regulars Trevor Jackson as Aaron Jackson, Jordan Buhat as Vivek Shah, Emily Arlook as Nomi Segal, Francia Raisa as Ana Torres, Deon Cole as Charlie Telphy and Luka Sabbat as Luca Hall.

Kenya Barris, Anthony Anderson, Laurence Fishburne, Helen Sugland and E. Brian Dobbins are executive producers of the series. ABC Signature Studios produces Grown-ish.
