Don’t call it an Eddie Murphy comeback! His Netflix vehicle, Dolemite Is My Name, won Best Comedy film at the 2020 Critics’ Choice Awards.

The film bested the competition which included Booksmart, The Farewell, Jojo Rabbit and Knives Out. Murphy was also nominated for Best Actor, which went to Joaquin Phoenix.

Dolemite Is My Name came over a decade after Murphy’s acclaimed turn in Dreamgirls and a year before Coming to America 2 hits theaters. Directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow, Coming to America 2), the film also stars Keegan-Michael Key, Wesley Snipes, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Mike Epps, Craig Robinson, Tituss Burgess, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Snoop Dogg, Ron Cephas Jones, Barry Shabaka Henley, Tip ‘TI’ Harris, Luenell and Tasha Smith.

Our review of the film reads, “This is the Eddie Murphy that we saw in Boomerang and Harlem Nights, the Eddie Murphy who years later, is still at the top of his game. If Dolemite Is My Name is any indication, then it’s time to officially roll out the carpet for the Eddie Murphy renaissance, because he’s back like never left.”
