Dwayne Wade owes a debt of gratitude to Pose

As them. reports, the NBA star said on the I Am Athlete podcast that he noticed how his daughter Zaya, who came out as trans in 2020, reacted to seeing Pose character Damon get kicked out of his home for being gay.

“For the first time, she saw that she doesn’t have to live life like that,” he said. “At that moment, I was like, ‘Thank you for allowing me to be her father,’ because there are lesser people out there who can’t get over themselves.”

He also added in his Instagram post, “It’s my job as your father to put you in a position to succeed…it’s not my job to change you.”

Ryan Jamaal Swain, who plays Damon in the series, tweeted out his appreciation, writing “Why we tell the story: visibility matters. Love to the Wade family. Special love and so much respect for my [Pose family] for allowing me to bear witness to Damon’s story.”

The third and final season of Pose recently wrapped production and will premiere in May.
