Episode 1 of BET's New Anthology Series Recreates 'F*ck the Police' - Watch a Clip

Murder Inc. founder Irv “Gotti” Lorenzo has teamed up with BET Networks to produce “Tales” is a scripted anthology series of “song stories” weaving classic and current hip-hop songs into visual narratives from the lyrics of some of hip-hop’s greatest hits.

Through songs like NWA’s “F*ck the Police”, Notorious B.I.G.’s “I Got a Story to Tell”, Meek Mill’s “Cold Hearted”, Fetty Wap’s “Trap Queen”, to name a few, each song’s lyrics are imagined as cinematic adventures with different directors, including Irv Gotti’s directorial debut. Each episode is written by a different screenwriter, introducing “Tales” as an innovative twist to hip-hop culture by reimagining our favorite hip-hop songs as we know them into “mini-movies”.

The premiere episode recreates NWA’s “F*ck the Police”, which focuses on a controversial police shooting of a young boy that flips the biases and stereotypes of today’s society. And each week, the suspenseful stories reimagine the meaning of each original song and take viewers on an adventure into some of the stories that play inspiration to the most iconic hip-hop hits.

The rotating cast includes Woody McClain, Keith Powers, Boris Kodjoe, Jennifer Freeman, Elise Neal, MC Lyte, Lance Gross, Christian Robinson, Matthew Noszka, Chet Hanks, Clifton Powell, Michelle Hayden, Michelle Mitchenor, Lil Duval, DC Young Fly, Rico Ball and more help bring the music to life in the BET original series.

Created and executive produced by Irv “Gotti” Lorenzo and his Visionary Ideas production company, alongside producer Ron Robinson, writer/producer Joy Kecken and co-producers Darcell Lawrence, John Bryant and Sonny Lorenzo, “Tales” is set to premiere on BET  on June 27, 2017.

The premiere episode which stars Chet Hanks (Showtime’s “Shameless”), Boris Kodjoe and Clifton Powell is a recreation of NWA’s “F*ck the Police” and, according to BET, “focuses on a controversial police shooting of a young boy, and warps some of the racial biases and stereotypes we see in today’s society.”

BET has released a first-look clip (and images above) from the episode, which is embedded below. It’s not very clear what’s happening in the clip, but based on all available info (the pictures and the clip), it appears that the “warping of racial biases and stereotypes” mentioned in the BET synopsis, in this case might mean that the characters you’d expect to be black (the protagonists), are white, and vice-versa (black cops instead of white cops)… at least that’s my guess without having anything else to go on. Feel free to share yours.

“Tales” premiers on BET on Tuesday, June 27th, at 8pm.
