Amazon is adapting the critically-acclaimed and criminally underseen film Fast Color as a series.
The series is coming from Viola Davis and Julius Tennon’s JuVee Productions, the film’s writers Julia Hart and Jordan Horowitz through their Original Headquarters and Mickey Liddell’s LD Entertainment. Hart also directed the original film, which starred Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Saniyya Sidney and Lorraine Toussaint.

First reported by Deadline, similar to the film, “the television series will follow Ruth, a former drug addict and runaway, who returns home and rediscovers the special powers she thought she lost, powers that her family have long kept hidden from the public. Three generations of black women reconnect and as they learn more about themselves and the generations who came before, they begin to realize that one of them could save the world.”
The pilot will be written by Hart and Horowitz while Hart will direct. Andrew Wang will executive produce for Davis and Tennon’s JuVee, alongside Hart and Horowitz, Liddell and Pete Shilaimon.
“Since the day we premiered at SXSW, there has been an incredible outpouring of grassroots support for this film. We couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to continue living in this world, with these women, and can’t imagine better partners than Viola and Julius and Mickey and Pete and everyone at Amazon,” said Hart.
This project falls under Davis and Tennon’s first-look deal at Amazon, where they are also developing Wild Seed, based on the work of Octavia Butler.

We want to ask, ‘What if…..’ Fast Color allows us to live in a world that fullfills all of the above. It’s a story and world that reminds us that not only do we have a soul, but we have extraordinary, unlikely women who fiercely protect it,” said Davis and Tennon.
Recently, Amazon also acquired the rights to the critically-acclaimed Sundance selection from Tayarisha Poe, Selah and Spades, with plans to develop it as a series as well.
The film is now available on DVD/Blu-Ray and digital download.
