Chatting to Shadow And Act’s Trey Mangum about the Netflix thriller Fatal Affair, Nia Long talked about how the “specific formula” of psychological thrillers might not make sense during the acting process but comes together on screen.

“You have to play in the reality of the moment even if it feels a little bit unnatural because when you put the whole thing together, it works,” she said.

Long gave an example of a scene in the film in which the film’s villain David (Omar Epps) stalks Long’s character Ellie while she sleeps.

“We had to shoot the scene where I’m in bed and he breaks in and I’m sleeping and he leans over me. And I kept saying, ‘There’s no way I don’t feel this guy leaning over me…he’s gotta be a little bit further away,'” she said. “But when I watched it and it worked…that’s where you trust your director and that’s where you go, ‘Okay, I just have to trust the process because this is not as real as, you know, another genre, so to speak.”
