First Look At Jesse L. Martin As Marvin Gaye + Shooting Suspended For 2 Weeks

nullYou might recognize the above photo – the album cover for the 1971 studio album, What’s Going On. At least I think that’s what they are going for here.

So what do you think? I know it’s just one cropped picture.

Here’s the original Marvin Gaye cover for comparison; the rest of the story after the image below:

ScreenDaily is reporting that shooting has been suspended for 2 weeks on Julien Temple’s Marvin Gaye biopic, Sexual Healing, which Focus Features International picked up and will take to Cannes next week, where it plans to sell to international distributors.

But not to worry, because Focus says that the 2 week hiatus doesn’t have anything to do with financing, or any other problems that will hurt the production.

The suspension is said to be due to an unavailability of certain locations, which has led to an unavailability of certain cast members and vice versa.

And worth noting is that 70% of the shoot is reportedly already done! That was fast. It seems like it wasn’t so long ago that the announcement of Jesse L. Martin’s casting was made.

Focus Features will present a “great promo reel” at Cannes – one that I hope will make its way online soon afterward, although I doubt it.

S. Epatha Merkerson, will play Marvin’s Gaye’s mother, Alberta Cooper Gay. And Dwight Henry (Beasts of the Southern Wild) will be Marvin Gaye’s father, Marvin Gay, Sr., who fatally shot his son, killing him on April 1, 1984, following an argument at their Los Angeles home.

The film will be set in the early 1980s, and will focus on the making of the Midnight Love album, while Gaye was living in Belgium – a drug addict, considered something of a has-been at the time.

Also Brendan Gleeson and Vicky Krieps have joined the cast; Gleeson will play Freddy Cousaert, who helped Marvin get back into the swing of things. No word on what role Krieps is playing.

Grammy Award-winning producer Vassal Benford will executive produce and also compose the score.

Principal photography is taking place in Luxemburg and Belgium.

I’m glad that this is finally moving forward, after so many years of starts and stops. Look for a likely film festival debut in the first half of 2014. In fact, it’ll probably be on my 2014 Sundance or Cannes predictions lists.
