Flying Lotus and Eddie Alcazar

Acclaimed and celebrated music artist Flying Lotus and filmmaker Eddie Alcazar have partnered up to form the independent film finance and production outfit Brainfeeder Films, it was announced today.

The company will focus on producing “traditional and nontraditional entertainment” and commercial content for global audiences. The company will also act as an incubator for its producing partners and a haven for other filmmakers seeking freedom of expression and development.

The newly formed operation’s first feature film is titled “KUSO,” which Flying Lotus is directing and Alcazar is producing.

The film’s logline: Broadcasting through a makeshift network of discarded televisions, “Kuso” is tangled up in the aftermath of Los Angeles’ worst quake nightmare. Travel between screens and between aftershocks into the twisted lives of the survived.

The film is currently casting, for a shoot in Los Angeles.

The company is currently shepherding projects for filmmakers David Firth (“Salad Fingers”) and Dominic Hailstone as part of their commitment to foster emerging director’s creative visions. Firth recently completed the short “Cream,” which Brainfeeder produced. The film concerns a genius inventor who reveals his latest product: a revolutionary cream with the power to fix all of the world’s problems. But is it too much for people to handle?

“Eddie and I started Brainfeeder Films with the intention to produce and support influential and experimental entertainment for film and music fans around the world,” said Flying Lotus. “I’ve always wanted Brainfeeder to be a home for emerging artists, creative talent and filmmakers who are looking to work outside the traditional studio and independent distribution systems.”

Previously, Flying Lotus and Alcazar teamed up to produce the Sundance entry “FUCKKKYOUUU” which Alcazar directed with a Flying Lotus-produced soundtrack. The film garnered praise by critics and audiences alike, and was showcased as a World Premiere at Sundance Next Fest 2015, an Official Selection at Sundance 2016, and an Official Selection AFI Fest 2015. The film will also play the upcoming BFI Fest in London.

Flying Lotus, who is also known by his birth name Steven Ellison, made his directorial debut with his own short film “Royal,” which debuted to critical acclaim at the Sundance Next Festival in Los Angeles this past August.

Recently, Flying Lotus released the album “You’re Dead!,” an experimental insider and outsider discourse on the great lineage of jazz. In the spirit of the great Fusion collectives of the 1960s and 70s, Flying Lotus’ universe of supporting cast on the album expanded to encompass incredible musicians, visual artists and personalities including Herbie Hancock, Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dog.
